Career highlights: Julia was admitted as a solicitor in England & Wales in 1985 and has practised as a solicitor in Hong Kong since 1987. She is an experienced practitioner in the field of corporate finance including M&A, private equity, securities, funds, restructuring and regulatory work. Julia has extensive experience of China work and is a Mandarin speaker. Julia has worked with companies in the mining and minerals sectors on a variety of deals. She advises regulators, financial institutions and listed companies on the listing rules of both the Main Board of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong and the Growth Enterprise Market.
Julia led the Charltons team, which initiated and coordinated a major project involving over 20 law firms, 50 investment banks and two ‘big 4’ accounting firms to produce the Sponsor Due Diligence Guidelines, published in 2013. The Guidelines subsequently have been updated and are available free online in English and Chinese. They are in the process of being translated into Russian.
Recent restructuring work that Julia has been involved with includes advising a major bank in relation to the default of a borrower under certain pre-financing arrangements; advising two major banks jointly in relation to the default of various PRC borrowers under certain pre-financing arrangements and advising these banks on their rights under relevant insurance policies and other matters in relation to the cross-border enforcement of securities; advising on the reorganisation of a large publishing company, including not only the physical splitting of assets but publications under licence; and, advising on the pre-insolvency restructuring of an insurance business, preference share refinancing, and the restructuring of a hedge fund investment in a trading business with debt and equity components.

Julia is a member of the Takeovers Panel and Takeovers Appeals Panel of the SFC, the Listing Committee of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong, the Investigation Panel A of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Education Committee of the HKSI, the Company Law Committee of the Hong Kong Law Society, and the Edinburgh Napier University Vice Chancellor’s Asian Advisory Committee.
Awards: Charltons was awarded ’Boutique Law Firm of the Year‘ by Asian Legal Business in 2002, 2003, and 2006 to 2015. It was named ’Hong Kong’s Top Independent Law Firm‘ in the Euromoney Legal Media Asia Women in Business Law Awards 2012 and 2013. Charltons received the ’Legal Restructuring Deal of the Year‘ award in 2000 from International Financial Law Review for its restructuring of Guangdong Enterprises.
Julia was awarded ‘Hong Kong Capital Markets Lawyer of the Year’ in the Finance Monthly Global Awards 2014. She was named in the Hong Kong American Chamber of Commerce/South China Morning Post Women of Influence Awards 2008 as ‘Professional of the Year’.
