Career highlights: Azlina is the senior legal counsel (in-house) of Henry Goh & Co and heads the prosecution unit of the trademarks department. Complementing this area of expertise, she is well versed in providing clients with pre-litigation advice on trademark, copyright and industrial design infringement, passing-off issues and corporate IP due diligence. Her knowledge and skills further extend to securing trade description orders for enforcement work, consultancy work on franchise and licensing agreements, domain name registration and protection, as well as a diverse range of IP-related matters.
Azlina read law at the University of Kent in Canterbury, UK, graduating with honours in 1993. Intellectual Property became her specialty when she started her legal practice in 1996 at a leading law firm in Malaysia. She joined Henry Goh in 2004 and is a registered trademark, patent and industrial design agent. She regularly represents the firm at major international conferences, such as INTA, APAA and FICPI.
Azlina is a member of various IP organisations, such as the Malaysian Intellectual Property Association (MIPA), the Licensing Executive Society of Malaysia (LESM), the Malaysian Intellectual Property Alumni Association (MIPAA), the Asian Patent Attorneys Association (APAA), and is an alumnus of the Association of Overseas Technical Scholarship (AOTS). Holding on to the belief that learning is a lifelong experience, she has participated in various training programmes, such as the JPO/IPR Training Course in Japan (1998 and 2008), as well as the IP Valuation and IP Business Basics course (2009) organised by the IP Academy of Singapore.
Her experiences in this niche profession have received professional recognition and acknowledgment from her industry peers, and she has been listed as an Asialaw Leading Lawyer for the years 2012, 2013 and 2014. Likewise, she has been distinguished as one of Malaysia’s Recommended Individuals for trademark work in the WTR 1000 for the years 2012, 2013 and 2014. The accolades arose from her deft handling of large trademark portfolios and the successful management of her team.
Her recent notable work includes providing counsel and litigation support services to one of the world’s biggest food and drink manufacturers for industrial design infringement. In addition, Azlina was the lead agent handling a trademark appeal case at the High Court of Malaya, which is highly regarded for its handling of Malaysian trademark cases. She has effectively coordinated numerous legal actions for clients in respect of IP infringement. Azlina is the editor of the firm’s in-house publications and often speaks at seminars organised by the firm for clients and the public.
