South Korea’s banking and finance lawyer Jong Ku Choi brings home asialaw’s October lawyer of the month for his high-profile career switch from a former Chairman of the Financial Services Commission (FSC) to a special advisor at Yoon & Young.
Having been practising in the banking and financial services industry for nearly four decades, Choi will leverage his expertise to advise a wide range of clients on all traditional financial issues. He will also help companies in newly emerging areas such as FinTech and virtual assets to navigate the market.
When serving as the Chairman of FSC from July 2017 to September 2019, Choi stabilised household loan growth by introducing the Debt Service Ratio (DSR) Regulation, established innovative financial services, such as Internet banks and financial regulatory sandboxes.
He also led reforms in FinTech and other digital financial regulatory areas. Meanwhile, he is credited for his important role in fostering South Korea’s venture capital and in reforming the accounting system.
Choi started his career at the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MOEF). Prior to FSC, He also served as a Senior Vice Governor of the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) and the President of Export-Import Bank of Korea.
